Erie Canal Museum and Canal Luncheon Cruise
(Spouse/guest)

photo of Syracuse's Erie Canal Museum

On this excursion we will step back in time to learn what canal life was like back in the days when the Erie Canal was a major link to the westward development of our country. First we will board a motor coach for a short hop downtown for a guided tour of the Erie Canal Museum, located in the Weighlock Building, a facility that weighed canal boats to determine their toll. The building is the only remaining weighlock from the Erie Canal. The canal was a marvel of human ingenuity and engineering for its time. Opened in 1825 it provided a direct sheltered water route between Albany and Buffalo. It was nick named “Clinton’s Ditch” after then New York Governor DeWitt Clinton who lobbied hard to have it built. Though it was often referred to as a waste of taxpayers money and doomed to certain failure, this waterway went on to provide incredible economic growth along its route and became a major pathway for our country’s westward expansion. After visiting the museum, we will board our coach for another short hop to Dutchman’s Landing where we will board the City of Syracuse and take a luncheon cruise on the section of this famous waterway that passes through Lock 24 in the village of Baldwinsville. During our cruise, our captain will regale us with facts and stories about life then and now along the “Old Erie.” We will end our cruise staring down on the skyline of Syracuse as we enter the inner harbor and a look at plans for DestiNY USA, an enormous mall complex in the works for Syracuse.

Cost to attendee: $40 (Covers all costs)
