Stormwater Management Enforcement—The Latest EPA Initiative (PIE: 1 PDH; AIA: 1 CEU)

Matthew R. Van Patten, C.H.M.M, P.E., C.E.M.—Apex Environmental, Inc.

The Environmental Protection Agency’s stormwater regulations are starting to impact university construction projects and maintenance operations. Phase II of the regulations were recently put in place. This phase requires protection plans and implementations for most projects. It also requires municipalities to put in place inspection and enforcement procedures. This presentation will provide an overview of the regulations, assistance for the preparation of stormwater pollution prevention plans, recommendations for a PM schedule and guidance for negotiating with regulators.

Retro-Commissioning A Solution for Today’s Modern Facilities (PIE: 0.75 PDH; AIA: 1 CEU)

Mark Miller, P.E., C.E.M.—Strategic Building Solutions, LLC

In a climate of escalating utility costs, increasing budgets pressures, and recent additions of new modern buildings, the energy and operational savings present in the nation’s inventory of existing buildings can be likened to “gold waiting to be mined.” Unfortunately, the opportunities are being ignored. The speaker will discuss how retrocommissioning is increasingly being employed to realize this untapped savings potential, create a high return on investment, and improve building performance.

Case Study—Pace University Indoor Environmental Quality Program (AIA: 1 CEU)

Shannon Magari, ScD, M.S., M.P.H.—Colden Corporation Bill Link—Pace University

Pace University’s indoor environmental quality program optimizes HVAC system maintenance and hygiene and response requirements to moisture intrusion and mold growth, and has a proactive engagement of occupant complaints. Explore with us the changing environment of the air volume inside the building envelope and learn what you can do to improve the indoor environmental quality of your buildings. Take with you mechanical hygiene and maintenance checklists, ASHRAE comfort parameters, and a response plan for moisture intrusion and mold growth.

Toxic Mold: Building Contamination, Health Effects, Investigation Methods and Remediation (PIE: 1 PDH; AIA: 1 CEU)

Richard K. Rote, M.S., C.I.H.—Labella Associates, P.C.

Multimillion dollar lawsuits have brought this issue to the attention of mainstream media and captured concerns of parents across the country. Get technical information in an understandable session on mold as a component of indoor air quality investigations and toxic mold and how it gets into our buildings. Related topics to be discussed are sampling methods considerations for remediation.

Proactive Risk Management for Construction and Renovations

John E. Osborn, P.C.—Attorney & Counselor at Law

Carrying out a capital program exposes the institution to a wide range of new risks unique to the process. Planning in advance allows you to significantly limit or transfer the risk. This interactive seminar examines the risks and provides for a proactive management to limit exposure. The seminar includes a discussion of architect contracts, construction insurance, payment and performance bonds, and environmental insurance.

Monday, September 27 - 1:30 p.m. to 2:30 p.m.

Daylighting (AIA: 1 CEU)

Thomas Bucher, P.E.—LaBella Associates, P.C.

The use of sunlight to illuminate building interiors is not a new concept. This program explains how daylighting can improve the indoor environment, improve productivity, and reduce energy costs. The presentation will include building technologies required for an effective daylighting system.

Beyond the Condition Assessment (AIA: 1 CEU)

David A. VanOcker P.E.—CVM Engineers
Thomas J. Allen—Vassar College

Renewal of older college campus facilities is a continual but essential endeavor to ensure the enduring values of our institutions long into the 21st century. Facility managers are familiar with condition audits as a vital facet of renewal programming. Getting beyond the audit is often more than simply a matter of money though. This presentation chronicles how Vassar College incorporated that first step, the facility condition audit into a campus-wide program that integrated multiple preexisting master plans initiatives and refocused renewal efforts and redirected themselves to preserving the enduring values of their institution.

Attaining the Resources You Need by Automating APPA’s Maintenance Staffing Guidelines (PIE: 1 PDH; AIA: 1 CEU)

Bold Landscaping—Dramatic Impact and Reduced Maintenance (AIA: 1 CEU)

Terry L. Ettinger, Principal Horticulture Consulting Services

Using the more than 7,000 plant Oncenter convention complex landscaping installation design by the presenter as a case study, this presentation will illustrate how replacing 15,000 square feet of turf with large-scale planting of spring-flowering bulbs, perennials, and ornamental grasses has reduced maintenance costs, created a visually stunning landscape project.
